Kayaking on the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is the perfect place for outdoor enthusists. Kayaking is just one of the many hobbies that locals and tourist from all of the world enjoy on the Outer Banks.

Kayaking on the Ocean may not always be the best idea for the novice kayaker due to strong winds, currents and waves, however there are days when the water is calm and flat for as far as the eye can see. For the adventure seeker, Kayaking in the Ocean can be the ultimate thrill as you can ride the waves as do surfers.

For the more relaxing kayaking experience, take a kayak out on the Sound. The Sound is typically always calm and you can glide in and out of marsh paths, explore untouched, uninhabited beaches & islands or you can even take a scenic kayak trip down to Roanoke Island.

There are plenty of rental companies that rent Kayaks by the day and some of our vacation homes come equipped with kayaks for you to enjoy on your vacation. Some companies like Kitty Hawk Kites offer scenic Kayak tours of the Outer Banks - this is something I highly recommend.

Held annually in September is an adventure race which includes, running, biking, kayaking and swimming for a total of 50 miles. So if you are up for the challenge, you may want to look into signing up for this extremely challenging race.

Here is a short clip of a Kayaker on the Ocean off the Outer Banks.
