Let’s go sailing!

The Albemarle Sound, located between the Outer Banks and the mainland, offers wonderful sailing grounds. Often times you will spot dolphin frolicking in the waves (they love to hear Jimmy Buffett tunes). If you have your own boat, you can launch it at one of the public boat ramps located on the Outer Banks. If you don’t have a boat, but want to include sailing in your itinerary, there are numerous sailing opportunities to take advantage of.

The 55-foot topsail schooner Downeast Rover departs from downtown Manteo and sails the Roanoke Sound. They sail three times a day for two-hour trips and offer additional private charters as well for weddings, bachelor/bachelorette parties and family reunions.

For a more intimate cruise, try the beautiful Tartan Offshore Cruising Ketch Pomaika'i. Three cruising options offer great ways to enjoy the fun and adventure of Pomaika’i. 4 Hour Morning Cruise - Late day/Sunset Cruise - Custom Cruise

Want to learn how to sail? The Outer Banks Sailing Academy offers adult and youth classes. The program features 9 Optimist prams and 4 Vanguard 420 dinghies that are on the water 5 days a week in morning and afternoon seminars. Students participating in the 420, and Opti Racer seminars will be invited to participate in the Outer Banks Sailing Academy—Roanoke Island Maritime Museum annual Small Boat Regatta.

We hope you enjoy your next visit to the Outer Banks and hope to see you on the water – GO SAILING!
